Led by the eponymous trumpet player, we can’t wait to host the Hugh Pascall Quintet and their “accessible, modern approach to post-bop jazz” at The Yard on Monday 9th May, treating the NQ Jazz audience to a taste of their new album, out soon via Pascall’s Attica Records.
Fresh from a popular residency at Peggy’s Skylight in Nottingham, the Manchester date of the Borderlands tour is among a handful that will see the core Quartet - completed by Oli Hayhurst on bass, John Turville on keys and Jay Davis on drums - briefly expand to a five piece as they team up with saxophonist James Allsopp.
Pascall’s professional career has taken him around the world, where, among others, he’s worked with New York collective, The Last Poets, and Hans Koller’s Birmingham Jazz Orchestra. Influenced by “the golden era for an exciting, iconic, lush jazz sound”, he cites stalwarts such as Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson as inspirations, boasting a broad range of tunes as a result, from beautifully lustrous ballads to irresistibly bouncing bops.
