Trish Clowes’ My Iris

  • The Yard 11 Bent Street Manchester United Kingdom (map)

A high intensity, mercurial workout provides further evidence that Clowes is an improviser to be reckoned with

Downbeat

Self-described as “a platform for individual expression, delivering driving grooves and lingering melodic lines”, we’re thrilled to be kicking off our upcoming programme with the mellifluous sounds of My Iris, the critically-lauded quartet led by celebrated saxophonist, Trish Clowes.

Named by The Guardian as “one of the most agile and original jugglers of improv and adventurous composition to have appeared in the UK in recent times”, Clowes is currently an Associate Artist at London’s Wigmore Hall and boasts six acclaimed solo albums, with her seventh, A View With A Room, on the way in April 2022.

Completed by Chris Montague on guitar, Ross Stanley on piano and organ and James Maddren on drums, My Iris have toured internationally, releasing two albums via Basho Records - their 2017 self-titled debut and 2019’s Ninety Degrees Gravity - both testament to the quintet’s capacity for crafting moreishly melodious, compellingly contemporary compositions. For the latter’s album track, Abbott & Costello, Clowes collaborated with director Rose Hendry to create a video inspired by the characters included in Denis Villenueve’s science fiction film, Arrival, providing an evocative accompaniment to an already aurally arresting creation.

“Brilliant”

Gilles Peterson

“…a beguiling Clowes solo that Lester Young or Ben Webster would have been proud of … Strong compositions brilliantly interpreted”
