On Monday 7th March, we’re pleased to welcome FORJ to the NQ Jazz stage, a band best known for their indefatigable embrace of improvisation.
Led by Scottish drummer Jonathan Silk - who’s joined by Nick Jurd on double bass, as well as two of London’s finest, Joe Wright and Josh Arcoleo, on tenor saxophones - the quartet consider their original material to be merely a framework to start from, continually tinkering with their compositions, the aim to subtly reinterpret or entirely reinvigorate them with every outing, ensuring that each performance is a new and inspiring experience, both for the band and the audience alike.
Their debut album, Skirfare, was released in February 2021 - its contents “a rocky but subtle set of intricate grooves and diverse melodies” - but it’s unlikely that you’ll ever hear your favourite tracks played live by the band verbatim. Following a stretch during which recorded material was the sole source of music available to so many of us, FORJ are firmly reclaiming the irreplaceable thrill that arises with the, for a while there, absent satisfaction of witnessing a familiar composition take shape - or in this case, start to somehow transform - right before your eyes.
“It was a joy to hear the interaction between Wright and Arcoleo”
