A Hologram Maze

  • The Yard 11 Bent Street Manchester United Kingdom (map)

“The music is all heartfelt stuff written over the past 2 years … and was born out of the idea of turning a lot of my personal troubles, thoughts, emotions and anxieties into something positive, and finding a way to express them musically.”

We’re thrilled to be hosting A Hologram Maze: a small ensemble performing the original music of UK-based pianist, David Austin Grey, who will be joined by four of Birmingham’s finest improvisers, some of whom are no stranger to appearing on the NQ Jazz stage.

Pieced together over the past two years, a “large chunk” of David’s new material was written during the UK’s various lockdowns and was “born out of the idea of turning a lot of [his] personal troubles, thoughts, emotions and anxieties into something positive and finding a way to express them musically.” The results are unsurprisingly reflective, rich yet subtly refined, energetic explorations tempered by twinkling moments of tenderness, the listener swept along on a tide of understatedly elegant sincerity from the start of each song to its finish.

Boasting influences as far ranging as Thundercat, Miles Davis, A Tribe Called Quest, Max Richter and Ben Wendel, David has long since been a stalwart of the UK scene and having recently wrapped up the recording of debut release, The Beauty Of A Co-Pilot, at Birmingham’s Sansom Studios - featuring a special guest appearance from Hatian vocalist, Germa Adan - and performed two sold out shows at The Vortex, Hologram Maze is certain to prove another creative triumph in the career of a musician who already boasts many.
