The Listening Guide

🎶 The listening guide: five albums, released during the past twelve months, chosen around a weekly theme ðŸŽ¶

This week, we salute five brilliant multi-instrumentalists, who it would seem could turn their hand to just about anything in the music shop! From synths and percussion to horns and string instruments, some have made records entirely by themselves, others overdubbing various parts in conjunction with the contributions of other players. Dig in!

Morgan Guerin – The Saga III

Ashley Paul – Rey

Jyoti – Mama, You Can Bet!

Chris Potter – There is a Tide

Emma-Jean Thackray – Rain Dance

Album of the Week

Our NQ Jazz album of the week is Tony Tixier’s I Am Human — a vinyl-only project from the talented pianist and composer. The album consists of solo pieces and remotely-recorded duets with the likes of Logan Richardson, Tony’s twin brother Scott Tixier, plus Hermon Mehari, Ben Leifer, and Adrien Soleiman. Check out track previews and order the LP via Bandcamp!

Classic Album

Released sixty years ago on the Prestige label, Trane Whistle is a fine big band record featuring playing from such greats as Melba Liston, Eric Dolphy, and Clark Terry, amongst others. Oliver Nelson’s beautiful compositions, including his gorgeous piece ‘The Stolen Moment’, make up the majority of the six songs, whilst Davis’ whirlwind number ‘Jaws’ closes the LP.
