The Listening Guide

🎶 The listening guide: five albums, released during the past twelve months, chosen around a weekly theme ðŸŽ¶

The electric organ — particularly the Hammond B3 — has been cemented into the history of jazz and R&B music by the likes of Jimmy Smith, Booker T. Jones, and Shirley Scott. There’s no doubt that it can play an essential role in the electrified small ensemble. This week’s listening guide theme is dedicated to the instrument and those who’ve mastered it: from the likes of Rhoda Scott and Doug Carn, who began their careers back in the sixties and continue playing today, to younger players like the brilliant Delvon Lamarr and the Terence Blanchard-approved RED ensemble, whose organist Bob Wijnen helps the group to authentically portray the musical styles of New Orleans. You can check out and support every project on Bandcamp!

Album of the Week

Our NQ Jazz album of the week is vocalist and composer Gretchen Parlato’s first release for Edition Records and first studio album in a decade. Entitled Flor, it features a core band of Marcel Camargo (guitarist and MD), Artyom Manukyan (cello), and Léo Costa (drums/percussion). Guest appearances come from Blue Note pianist Gerald Clayton, drummer Mark Guiliana, plus legendary percussionist and vocalist Airto Moreira. The uplifting record makes space for a variety of inspiring voices, and features a rendition of Bowie’s No Plan alongside original compositions. Purchase the record from Edition Records’ web store.
